Volume 4, Issue 3

Welcome

When you read this, I will be in southern Spain staying with a friend who is living his dream. Rafael is a longtime friend who — with his cousin — used to run one of Toronto's finest restaurants, L'hardy's.

A few years ago, he decided that the most important aspect of life, for him, is time. He wanted more time and would do what he had to do to make that happen. So he moved back to southern Spain, where he now spends his days reading, writing, tending his garden, walking along the beach, cooking amazing meals, and being with friends, his partner, and his dogs. He has downscaled his life considerably but is living and loving his dream.

Another friend, Anthony Christopher, is living his dream. Just back from filming a research project in the Arctic, as a self-proclaimed "guerrilla producer," he travels the world documenting important progressive but often overlooked events. You can view magnificent vistas, listen to researchers discuss their findings, and become a part of the project by signing on for his newsletter here.

I'm living my dream, too — helping folks find their own magnificence through the power of their minds. So whether I do this in the clinic or in the school, it's a dream coming true. The next step is for me to take the dream deeper and wider, to kids on the streets, to other countries, and to the Internet. Watch this space for updates!

Namaste,
Georgina

The Power of Sound
by Sandra Levy
Sound. The Big Bang. We come from sound, we are created through sound, and we are born surrounded by sound into a life supported by sound. Consciously or unconsciously, sound triggers stored feelings and memories, pleasant and unpleasant.

Sound is a powerful tool we can use with hypnosis to enhance a trance. We already use words, which are a form of sound. Different sounds can magnify the experience for a client. Sound is entrancing.

As hypnotists, when we guide a person into trance, we in fact are using the process of abstraction. A person experiences abstraction when his or her listening attention narrows to what is most important or what is most predominant. In that moment of concentration, focus, people ignore external causes of interference, mostly sounds. We induce the client to focus only on the sounds that are beneficial for the session, eliminating unimportant ones from the mix. In my training as a sound practitioner, I learned to pay attention to what kinds of sounds I could use during a hypnotic state to enhance the trance and the experience for the client.

For example, if I am working with someone with an anxiety problem, I may use hypnotic suggestions for relaxation. Depending on the client's needs, I may include the sound of an ocean drum or nature sounds to induce deeper states of relaxation. The same client may want to discover what it is that triggers his or her anxiety. Once the client is in a hypnotic state, I may ask what sounds or words tend to be present at the time of feeling anxious, or when the anxiety level starts to rise.

In my office, I have a range of instruments — shakers, rain sticks, tuning forks, kalimbas, drums, and didgeridoos — that I sometimes use to re-create a certain soundscape that produces anxiety in the client. I may even repeat words that he or she finds uncomfortable, but always being present, always putting the client's well-being first.

Hypnosis and sound work are similar and complement each other as tools for therapy in many ways. Both methods of therapy are based in observing what arises from the "in trance" client in terms of emotions, body sensations, images, desires, cravings, and physical changes.

Sandra Levy, BA, CHt, BCH, is a psychotherapist, hypnotist, and sound practitioner who is fluent in English, Spanish, and French. She can be reached at 416-783-7304 or by e-mail at sandra@sanlynwellness.com.

Spring into Action
by Lynn Perry

It is in the air and on our minds...Spring. It's finally here! After a long, cold winter, comfort foods have left their mark around midsections and a sluggishness is felt due to hectic schedules and endless responsibilities. Our bodies have been craving fresh air, sunshine, and movement.

There is no better time of the year to get back on track. Let's spring into action with a revitalizing walking program. It's simple, convenient, safe, and affordable. The only thing you have to budget for is time. Begin by pulling out comfortable clothing along with appropriate walking footwear. If you are hoping to reduce your fat levels over the next several weeks, be sure to take your measurements as inches will be lost with consistent walking.

Warm up before you begin your walk by marching on the spot and moving your arms in a rhythmic motion for two to five minutes. This will bring more blood to your working muscles, raise your body temperature slightly and lubricate your joints.

Walk for a minimum of 20 minutes. Just open your front door and walk in a direction. Make use of your arms and create a good rhythm with your legs. Keep your shoulders relaxed and breathe deeply. You can increase the fat burn by quickening your pace or lengthening your stride. This will cause you to perspire and let go of toxins that have built up in your tissues. Walk briskly rather than leisurely. Once you have reached your halfway time, head back.

Cool down by slowing your pace for several minutes until your breathing rate is back to normal. Also, allow time for your heart to adjust to the change in activity to prevent lightheadedness and muscle stiffness.

For internal spring cleaning, hydrate and fortify your body with water and raw vegetables. Begin by consuming two to four glasses of pure water and two cups of chopped or julienne RAW vegetables daily to help hydrate and nourish your body with minerals, vitamins, and enzymes.

Remember, walking is the foundation for all other exercise. It will help you strengthen, clean, and rejuvenate your body. Enjoy your community, smile at your neighbours, stay in the moment, and connect with your senses. Most importantly, take time to smell the tulips — after all, spring is here!
