OHC LifeChanger

August 24, 2007

Volume 3, Issue 8

Welcome

With the opening of the fall fair (the CNE) in Toronto, we know it's the beginning of the end of summer. Long shadows lengthen mornings, and daylight disappears earlier. Flowers and shrubs are making a last valiant effort to stay colourful (aren't we all!), and all of nature prepares for the journey inward.

This is the time for trees and vegetation to sink their roots deeper into the earth for sustenance as they plan for their flourish next spring. I've been wondering what I can do this winter to nourish my roots. What new knowledge can I gain? What new understandings can I explore and possibly embrace? The next few weeks will tell.

What about you? How will you nourish your roots to ready yourself for the next springtime??

Namaste,
Georgina
Birthing Naturally?
by Shawn Gallagher
Did you know that in our age of technology and science, chemical anaesthesia is used in almost all births? Did you know that the rate of Caesarean section only continues to rise?
In 1970, just over five percent of babies were delivered through surgery. Today, Canada's Caesarean section rate is 26 percent — this represents a rise of over 500 percent since 1970!

This, despite a recommendation from the prestigious World Health Organization (WHO) for a Caesarean section rate of no higher than 15 percent.

In fact, giving birth naturally is becoming more of a rarity. (In some sectors in Brazil, the Caesarean rate is more than 70 percent.) In another generation, will natural birth become obsolete? Many Canadian doctors, midwives, educators, policy planners, and even taxpayers are looking for ways to slow this concerning trend.

Is it possible? With hypnosis, yes, it is.

I worked for over 13 years as a midwife, attending hundreds of births in home, hospital, and clinic settings in Canada and the United States. It quickly became obvious to me that while every birth is different, the one constant is that birthing women can use their minds in very powerful ways. But because most women haven't learned how to use their minds in such ways, it is very common during the birth to hear them say "I can't do this," "It is only going to get more painful," "I'm suffering," or "I need drugs to cope."

But did you know that every birthing woman is in trance? In fact, childbirth is a natural hypnotic state that occurs as a result of hormones released in birth. Research shows us that trance is associated with a heightened receptivity to suggestion. It would seem very important, then, to introduce powerful and positive suggestions to women while they are in this receptive state — NOT the negative suggestions that they are used to hearing from themselves and others (see above).

In fact, hypnosis works optimally when women practise self-hypnosis throughout pregnancy, using their preferred suggestions.

In my prenatal series, Hypnosis for Childbirth, I teach women and their partners self-hypnosis and how to use it during birth. One of the most important parts of these classes is participants' uncovering their subconscious preferences for pain management. For most, this new and wonderful discovery about themselves is one they can use for life. They can even teach hypnotic pain management tools to their children.

As women learn powerful ways to create greater comfort in their births, their natural physiology is allowed to take over: The uterus works the way it is designed to, tension releases, the body opens, and the baby is born in an environment of greater calm and peace.

If you or anyone you know is expecting a baby, consider using the power of the mind for a more manageable and easier birth — hypnosis is a valuable skill for life.

Shawn Gallagher, BA, BCH, is a Board Certified Hypnotist and associate at the Ontario Hypnosis Centre. Her Hypnosis for Childbirth series has resulted in dramatically faster births with significant reductions in pain medication and Caesarean section for hundreds of parents. Weekend intensive courses are available — click here or call 416-255-8333. Private sessions at the OHC can be booked at 416-489-0333 or info@ontariohypnosiscentre.com. In October, Shawn is teaching Cooling the Flash — innovative hypnosis to deal with the changes of menopause.

Psychotherapy and Hypnosis — Aligning the Conscious and the Subconscious
by Mark Allen

After beginning my practice as an OHC-trained hypnotist, I felt the need to learn more about how to help the client after the hypnosis sessions. I found that clients often had deeper issues that would begin to surface. The hypnosis would create the change, but people still needed to talk about it afterward. That's when I decided to study psychotherapy.

When I began my internship, I tried to stick to just talk therapy and not "cheat" by using my previous hypnosis training. But clients seemed to take longer to get to where they wanted to be. By using psychotherapy only, the repetitive patterns sometimes seemed harder to break.

But an interesting thing happened. I found that my clients often slipped into a waking trance anyway. My questioning, which encourages the client to look inward and allows them to work with previously hidden or intangible parts of themselves, moves the focus automatically to the subconscious mind. The merger between hypnosis and psychotherapy becomes seamless and transparent since both focus on the client's own experience and inner wisdom. "The client always has the answer," Georgina taught us — and every day proves it.

Psychotherapy, or experiential tasks such as homework for the client between sessions, enables the conscious mind to own and accept past choices, to make different choices, and most importantly to act on them. Hypnosis allows the subconscious mind to express, feel, release, and receive.

Getting both sides on-board, right and left brain, conscious and subconscious, allows clients to get to where they want to be in life — empowered and with a lot less time spent getting in their own way.

In 2004, Mark Allen, RIHR, MHt., trained at the Ontario Hypnosis Centre and became a certified hypnotherapist with the National Guild of Hypnotists. He has been an associate of the clinic since. In 2006, he completed a two-year psychotherapy program and spiritual directorship training at Transformational Arts College. He is currently practising full-time using both psychotherapy and hypnosis to effectively assist clients in working with their own wisdom to move toward balance.
