Volume 3, Issue 3

Welcome

"I want to be enlightened," said the young man sitting in the hypnosis chair opposite me, "and I'd like it to happen as soon as possible — which is why I'm here," he added. He explained that he'd just recently become spiritual and wanted to go "all the way" quickly because he had a lot of things to do before he turned 30, and this was one of them.

I explained that enlightenment wasn't like baseball, where you could possibly hit a home run in your first game — it takes a little longer than that. A little more focus. A little more wisdom. And a lot more life! I suggested we start with a mutual understanding of what he meant by becoming spiritual because it is different for everyone. For him, he had connected with his higher self during a Reiki session and had loved the feeling of peace it had given him. He wanted more, and bigger, along with the magic that comes with it.

During that session, we discussed the different forms of spirituality available (including formal religions, wicca, and new age), how they all related to each other, and how we all related to the universe and each other. I suggested he start his journey by going to the Shambhala Centre to learn to meditate, maybe take a yoga class (yes, there are yoga classes for guys, I reassured him), and reconnect with the nature he so loved as a child. We would continue to work on his current life issues so that he didn't get caught up in the "spiritual bypass" syndrome, and when ready, we would travel to past lives and life between lives. He got it: Enlightenment comes with living. Living with awareness, love, and kindness. And so does the magic!

Where do you find your enlightenment? At sunset or sunrise? With bird song? By the sea? On a mountain? With music? With a beloved?

Wishing you joy with your magic.

Namaste,
Georgina

Train Your Brain: Think Like an Athlete
by Vanessa Agosta
Top-level athletes win competitions for two reasons: (1) They are physically skilful and strong, and (2) they are mentally skilful and strong.

Years of research and hundreds of studies have shown that psychological preparation is crucial to optimum performance. So how can the strategies of top-level athletes help you succeed? Read on for a short lesson in "mental management" to enhance your own fitness success.

Practise Focused Attention
While most people spend a lot of time worrying about things they can't control, successful athletes pay attention to what is within their control. Control distractions by making a checklist of everything that might derail you from accomplishing your fitness goal. Eliminate the things you have no power over, like the weather, and focus on those you do, like having the proper shoes or equipment for your activity.

Visualize Successes
Athletes create mental images, like pictures or movies, of a desired outcome. While envisioning these scenarios, they imagine every visual detail and the way it actually feels to perform just the way they want to. With mental rehearsal, their minds and bodies become trained to actually perform the skill imagined.

Take some time before your workout or your game to visualize yourself going through the motions, feeling energized and strong. Then while you are exercising, visualize the muscles that are working and feel them as they contract and release. This helps intensify your workouts, and you'll get results more quickly. Try it a few times and you'll start to realize you can isolate muscles better and push them harder because you're focusing on them.

Talk to Yourself — A Lot
Believe it or not, even high-performance athletes need to give themselves pep talks every now and again. But it's not simply going through the motions of telling themselves "I'm going to win this" or "I'm a competent person" that makes the technique successful; it's the fact that they truly believe what they tell themselves. So make positive self-statements continually-but more importantly, believe them. Don't fight your inner critic; simply acknowledge the presence of negative thoughts, and then substitute them with positive affirmations.

Even if you have no intention of becoming a top-notch athlete, putting these principles into practice will help you to be better at whatever you do. Granted, training your mind takes as much discipline as training your body. But as with any big task, take your time with it and be persistent. Eventually, you'll improve. Take it from a non-Olympic athlete who has tried it on both her clients and herself: This stuff does work!

  • A Fresh Start

After taking the Professional Hypnotherapy diploma course with OHC in the summer of 2004 and assessing how I have changed within and the motivators that have influenced that change, I definitely have to say the biggest factor has been my training in hypnosis. It has given me insight into who I am and who I want to become.

The most powerful tool I have learned is self-hypnosis. It is so incredibly simple to learn and yet the benefits gained from putting it into practice are astronomical. The hypnosis training that I have had thus far has given me greater self-confidence, more self-awareness, and an unwavering belief within myself that I can be, do, and have anything that I want.

I use self-hypnosis regularly to help me focus on what I am trying to accomplish or change at any given time. Since the summer of 2004, the technique has helped me achieve the following goals:

  • quit smoking (during my hypnosis training with OHC in 2004)
  • lost 26 pounds in 2005–2006, using a combination of my hypnosis training and Weight Watchers (I've kept the weight off and am healthier, happier, and look and feel better than I ever have)
  • started walking twice a day and have kept that up since the summer of 2004
  • had the courage to walk away from an extremely bad second marriage
  • hosted my first personal development seminar — "How to Be, Do, and Have Anything You So Choose" — and had 50 people show up for it (fall of 2004)
  • wrote and published my first book, Inner Metamorphosis, January 2006
  • conquered my fear of driving on major highways (I still do not enjoy it but at least I'm doing it. Hypnosis works!)
  • did a presentation at the 2006 NGH convention (my "Hypnosize Me" weight management program), was impressed with my own results, and got a great review and turnout
  • got braces to straighten my teeth (that may not seem like such a big thing, but for me it was huge)
  • overcame a 10-year-old ankle injury and began running
  • am writing a second book on wealth and success called Millionaire Mindset and am planning a June 2007 release date (I never would have had the guts to write a book on this subject or approach and interview people without having greater self-confidence)
  • purchased a brand new Toyota Matrix in November 2005 while in the midst of a bankruptcy and paid it off within a year, and have recently purchased a new home

I could go on and on with positive things that have happened to me since the day I walked out of OHC's hypnosis class. That was the first day of a new life for me. And I am improving every single day. And now, along with saying each night "Every day in every respect I get better and better," every morning before my feet hit the ground, I tell myself "I'm going out to create miracles." And something wonderful always shows up for me.
