Volume 3, Issue 2

Welcome

As you read this, I will be getting ready for my visit to sunny (hopefully) Spain, celebrating an annual pilgrimage to the home of my heart. I wonder what it is about Spain that draws me — I haven't experienced a past life there yet. Friends — good long-time friends — are there, with a lemon tree in the garden, two dogs who think they're people, and a market full of fresh-smelling, fresh-tasting, colourful fruits and vegetables.

Also, it's blossom time; the square in the old city is filled with their fragrance, and everyone takes time to stop, have a coffee, smile at the warm sunshine and smell the flowers.

Back in Toronto, as we move into our Spring, how can I, how can we, remember to always smile at the warm sunshine and smell the flowers? It's an art I want to cultivate, particularly if there is no sun, and the only flowers come from the store. Want to join me in my new Spring decision?

Namaste,
Georgina

Release Your Inner Champ
by Rohit Bhalunkar
As each country's athletes ready themselves for the Olympics, and we start readying ourselves to watch the success and failure of champions, it's worth remembering how closely champions represent the best of who we are.

The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.

Paying the Price
Everyone wants to win, but few are willing to invest the time and effort. Paying the price means focusing on the skills and training regimen of champions — observation, imitation, repetition and the internalization of knowledge into habits. Also important are learning why and how to go the extra mile and seeing success as a marathon, not a dash. Champions view failures as temporary inconveniences and learning experiences.

Non-Situational Integrity
Authentic, lasting winners have an uncompromising attitude about self-honesty. They function according to an "integrity triangle" — belief, actions and results.

The "Coachability" Factor
Champions are always open to alternatives for improving their performance. They are not arrogant egotists. The most successful individuals in the game of life are often the most approachable and most gracious, the least judgmental with others, and the most critical of their own performances. They are also the most eager to learn and improve.

Being a Team Player
A team in harmony is synergy in motion, where the whole is greater than the sum of the individual talents. When all assignments are understood, when each takes 100 per cent responsibility for the outcome, a quantum leap in performance takes place.

Winners learn how to become interdependent without sacrificing individuality, how to stand out while fitting in.

Conquering the Fear

A man came to me about a month ago because he had a great fear of crowds. He had been experiencing this fear for many years, but more recently, it seemed to be getting worse, and it had begun to seriously affect his work and social life. He didn't go anywhere this past Christmas. Instead, he sent cheques to his family and declined all invitations. It was getting to the point where this man didn't know if he would be able to continue working.

I used a technique called the Affect Bridge to take him to the first time he had experienced his fear of crowds. It revealed him at about nine years of age, in a classroom of kids who were teasing him because he couldn't hear the teacher due to an ear infection. He had carried that early feeling of embarrassment and anxiety into other situations as he grew up. Eventually he had become afraid of having the fear!

After releasing the feelings and working to forgive, he was a new man. He came back a couple of weeks later to let me know that I had given him his life back. Of course, I told him he was the one who had done the work.

"I carried that fear for 40 years and got rid of it in 55 minutes," he said. Everyone around him has noticed the difference too, but he said he'll wait about a year before telling them how he accomplished the change.
