OHC LifeChanger

November 23, 2007

Volume 3, Issue 11

Welcome

As we get ready for the holiday season, I want to pass on my thanks to all of you who participate in making this world a better place. Starting with our over 9,000 readers! Each one of you is interested enough in bringing change to your world to sign up for LifeChanger — thank you! How can the world not be better with this energy?

Thanks also to our OHC school grads, who one by one use the magic of hypnosis to help people find joy and peace in their lives; our thousands of clients, who over the years have put their trust in us to help them make the changes they want; our clinic associates, who work with the highest integrity and training and who are as passionate about what they do to help bring change into people's lives as I am; and our office team, Cathie and Tariq. We couldn't possibly maintain our service standards without them. They are superb! And I thank them from the bottom of my heart. (If you feel like it, write and say thanks, too!)

I am grateful for my glorious friends, for my super family, and my health. I am honoured and humbled by the work I do and eternally grateful that life has brought me to this place.

Now if winter in Toronto weren't quite so cold, life would be perfect!

And you...? What are you grateful for? What are the grace notes in your life? What makes you smile and weep with joy? Write to us and share your joy. We'll celebrate the end of 2007 by reprinting some of your responses in our next LifeChanger.

Namaste,
Georgina

Beware of Garbage Trucks
by David J. Pollay
How often do you let other people's nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or insensitive co-worker ruin your day? Unless you're the Terminator, for an instant, you're probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of a successful person is how quickly he or she can return to focusing on what's important.

Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City cab. I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car pulled out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car's back end by just inches!

The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So I said, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!"

And this is when the driver told me what I now call the "Law of the Garbage Truck."

Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you.

I started thinking, how often do I let garbage trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people — at work, at home, on the streets? It was that day I said, "I'm not going to do it anymore."

Now I see garbage trucks. I see the load they're carrying. I see them coming to drop it off. And, like my taxi driver, I don't let it be a personal thing; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.

What would happen in your life, if, starting today, you let more garbage trucks pass you by? Here's my bet: You'll be happier!

The Art of Healthy Living
by C. Sarla Mills

The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, or not to anticipate troubles, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.
— Buddha

All of us have battled against some type of ill health of body, mind, or spirit, whether it was having a simple cold, facing a difficult challenge, or being diagnosed with a critical illness. These are normal human experiences. And during these challenging times, many of us may have succumbed to a suffering of sorts, wondering, "Why me?," "Why now?," or "What did I ever do to deserve this?" But when we focus on wishing away our challenges, we lose out on the chance to learn and grow. I believe that our difficulties are our greatest teachers. Without them, we would continue to live life without awareness.

Some people, despite transcending their problems, choose to live perpetually in their past miseries, making unsavoury events live well past their life spans. By living in the past, we prolong our suffering and lose out on opportunities to embrace a new future.

And then there are those who live in the future. They anticipate, they plan, they look forward with earnest, waiting anxiously for their plans to come to fruition. Alternatively, they worry about the future, causing their own stress, anxiety, or ill-health by anticipating problems.

People in such states of mind choose to suffer, even if they don't realize it at the time. They are not truly living. We only live when we are able to be in the moment — wisely and earnestly. But how do we do that? Does it mean not reflecting on our past and learning from it? Does it mean not having dreams or planning for the future?

You can reflect on and learn from your past yet leave it behind you. You can plan for the future yet not become attached to it. Living in the moment wisely is to bring to it the awareness of all the lessons of your past failures and successes so that you can maximize the present. Living in the moment earnestly is to allow yourself to appreciate your experience for what it is, in its true perspective, and to let go of any attachment to a desired outcome.

Life is made up of moments, so enjoy the journey of your personal growth by living each of them to its fullest!

QUOTES WORTH SHARING

"We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same."
—Carlos Castaneda

"Perhaps one day the world, our world, won't be upside down, and then any newborn human being will be welcome. We will say, 'Welcome. Come. Come in. Enter. The entire earth will be your kingdom. Your legs will be your passport, valid forever.'"
— Eduardo Galeano, Uruguayan author and historian

"Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do."
— Apple Computers
