Welcome

Wow!

Thanks to your support we are getting some terrific items for the OHC Publishing web site to share with you. Books and CDs from folks who, for one reason or another, haven't been able to distribute their products are coming in at a great rate.

We'll get the site up slowly though, as we want to make sure everything works brilliantly before going full steam ahead. When you do get to see the first version of the web site and all its offerings, I would love to hear from you!

Namaste,
Georgina

Hypnosis Works for Pain
by Karie Johnston

Most of us experience the discomfort of pain at some point in our lives. In fact, it is well documented that pain relief is the most common reason people seek help from health care professionals. That's a lot of pain going on!

There are as many different kinds and intensities of pain as there are ways to treat it. Unfortunately, studies show that pain can significantly reduce quality of life and the ability to fully function in one's occupation. Pain can lead to depression and, in the extreme, even suicide.

The list of pharmaceutical agents used in the quest for pain management is huge. The downside, of course, is that these drugs usually come with many potential adverse reactions. Also, drugs don't always bring relief, a frustrating situation for patients and their loved ones, as well as their medical doctors, other health care providers, and the insurance companies making disability payments.

With hypnosis, we explore motivation, expectation, imagination and insight to modify the emotional responses to pain. This helps people cope more effectively with their pain experience, culminating in the confidence to heal themselves. Self-hypnosis training is an essential component of this work as there is a potential for clients to experience discomfort at any time between hypnotherapy sessions.

Hypnosis has been shown to be an effective intervention for alleviating a wide variety of pain in up to 75% of people participating in different experiments. These results support the assertion that hypnosis is an excellent adjunct to any treatment regime. Many physicians, physiotherapists, dentists and other professionals involved in the ongoing rehabilitation of those who suffer are now including referrals to a qualified hypnotherapist as a matter of course. The word is out -- hypnosis works!

Karie Johnston is a Registered Nurse with extensive experience in pain management. She is a Certified Hypnotherapist and works specifically with clients at the OHC to reduce and eliminate the discomfort of pain, as well as to prepare people for scheduled procedures such as surgery or dental procedures.

Success Story: Phil's Children
by Dr. Robert W. McKellar

Phil came to me with a great desire to stop smoking. I gathered information through my intake questioning and observing Phil. I established and felt rapport.
Phil mentioned that his children were very supportive of his endeavour to give up smoking. He never mentioned his wife and I never pried because it had nothing to do with how we were going to approach his sessions.

Phil had given me enough information to determine that a Smoking Cessation compounded with the Switchboard would be sufficient for the first session. He also showed me he would be a good candidate for the Confusion Induction.

All indications showed that the process was successful.

A week later, I received a call from a colleague. Dr. John stated that I had helped Phil, one of his patients, and he would like to bring him back to me for a follow-up session. Would I mind if he came too?

The psychiatrist and my client arrived exactly on time and I was honoured by their visit. Dr. John said he was amazed we were able to hypnotize his client at all, let alone that Phil was able to give up cigarettes. Dr. John went on to explain what an enormous achievement it was to get all of Phil's children to agree on a matter.

However, one of the children still had an issue. This was the teenage son, Eugene. His feelings were hurt that we [Phil and I] hadn't asked his permission to conduct the sessions. Because of this, Eugene refused to speak to me directly.

What I had not suspected was that Phil had Dissociate Syndrome, better known as Multiple Personality Disorder. Phil had six "children" and always talked about them as separate, detached and real human children. To him, they were.

Dr. John sat in a chair removed to the corner to observe. I went to work on Phil. Because Phil had been hypnotized before, he was an easy subject. I used the Elman induction and Phil was relaxed in seconds.

With Phil in a relaxed state with eye catalepsy, I approached Eugene. I had Eugene use an ideomotor to indicate when I had his attention. He said yes by raising his forefinger. I asked him if he was prepared to assist Phil and me to get all of them off the tobacco addiction. He said yes. I told him I was grateful for his decision to help us and that I would be there for him if he needed assistance. I then touched Phil's shoulder and used the deepening skill and breathing suggestions to lower Eugene and then Eugene and Phil together.

Now the client was totally relaxed and calm and I again used the Smoking Cessation script along with the Switchboard technique. Eugene answered a lot quicker than Phil did.

When I brought Phil back, he seemed to be deeper than before and his comment was, "I'm glad that Eugene took control. I don't remember anything."

It's now been three weeks. Dr. John has called me requesting some of my cards and pamphlets. It seems he has some prospective clients for me to see.
