Volume 1, Issue 5

Welcome!

As the weather warms up and clothes come off, we all start to look at our bodies in a different way. It seems that some of us have 'eaten up' for winter's hibernation and put on the pounds. With the extra weight, we need to consider the alternatives to oozing over shorts and swimsuits. Is it more exercise? More salads? More sleep? MORE SLEEP?

Yes, research has shown that if you don't get enough sleep it can interfere with your insulin and melatonin levels, causing the body to hold onto fat. Who knew?

By using your smart self-hypnosis plan to deepen your levels of sleep, and to pep up your want to get out there and exercise, you'll encourage your body to re-organize itself for the new season.

Also, be kind to yourself and take the opportunity to snooze on sunny afternoons or lazy Sunday mornings. Allow your body and your mind to slough off the heaviness of winter to move into sleek, sun-kissed summer.

Exciting news! On Monday, June 8th, I'll be hosting the chat room on the Shirley MacLaine web site. The chat will be about the benefits of hypnosis and past life regression, and I'll be answering questions. People from around the world will be participating!

Namaste,
Georgina
Choosing a Holistic Practitioner
by Dr. Georgina Cannon

More and more people all over North America are seeking holistic therapies such as reflexology, naturopathic medicine and hypnotherapy. Research shows that the dollars spent on holistic and complementary medicine are growing beyond that spent in the allopathic field. This is an encouraging trend with positive implications for everyone becoming responsible for, and taking care of, their health for a longer, vital life.

But I have observed that most people spend more time buying a car than they do choosing their new holistic or complementary practitioners.

Think about that for a moment. Holistic practitioners don't just treat your body. They treat your mind, your body and your energy field. You are trusting them with your energy, soul and life force. That's the very essence of who you are! That said, it makes sense to take great care in choosing who will work with all those different parts of you.

Easier said than done, particularly if you can't get any personal recommendations. So what to do?

  • Interview potential practitioners, either face-to-face or on the telephone, before you make your decision. A five or 10-minute chat with the practitioner or the receptionist should suffice for your initial information gathering. Don't expect a lengthy free consultation, but do expect to have your pre-written questions answered fully. If you feel you're being brushed off, or that you're too much bother, don't go any further.

  • Check out their web site. Is it simple and factual with a personality you can respond to? Does it have an opportunity for you to contact them by e-mail with further questions?

  • Check out their office if you can. Is it clean and inviting? Does it look professional? Does the receptionist look professional? Are you treated well when you enter? If you have an opportunity to see the practitioner, do they look professional? Are you treated well when you talk to them?

  • Pay attention to how you feel when you are talking to the person. Does the practitioner listen to you and demonstrate caring? Do you feel good, or is there something in your gut that's telling you the person isn't a good fit for you?
Remember, you have the right to choose any practitioner you want. The person might be very competent, experienced and caring but just not click with you. That's OK! Different practitioners have different styles and personalities, and part of the selection process is looking for that intangible connection that makes you feel comfortable.

Here are some questions to ask in your interview:
  • What formal training do you have in this field?
  • What experience do you have in this field?
  • Do you practice part-time or full-time? How long have you been treating clients?
  • What is the scope and nature of the treatment you provide?
  • What are your fees and payment policies?
  • Can I contact any of your existing clients to ask them about your service?
  • Are you a member of any associations? What are they?
  • Does the medical profession refer clients to you?
  • Would you be willing to share my case notes with my medical doctor?
Well-chosen holistic practitioners can help you change your life dramatically. Take your time, do your research and choose wisely. You are putting your mind, body and spirit into someone else's hands -- literally.

The Ancient Practice of Reiki
by Barb Keshen

We live in a world that is constantly changing, becoming more stressful and demanding much of us both physically and energetically. As a result, people are turning to alternative therapies to enhance and maintain their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. One of these alternative therapies is the ancient practice of Reiki.

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a form of natural healing with roots going back to ancient Tibet. Re-discovered in the early 1900s by Buddhist teacher Dr. Mikao Usui, it has since been acknowledged by our modern world as a technique that is very effective in maintaining both physical and energetic balance.

The 'rei' part of the word means 'universal', and the 'ki' stands for 'life force energy.' The word is very descriptive of what happens during a Reiki session. The Reiki practitioner connects with universal healing energy and brings it through his or her hands into the client's personal energy field or ki. During a Reiki session, you lie fully clothed on a massage table while receiving relaxing energy from the practitioner. The focus of the session is to clear any blocks in your energetic field.

The session increases the effective flow of your vital energy, which in turn encourages healing on all levels of your being. During the session, you can expect to experience a deep sense of relaxation, increased energy, pain relief, reduced levels of stress and an overall feeling of wellness.

One of Reiki's most beneficial aspects is that you can easily do a session on yourself; it is very simple to learn.

Whether you choose to experience Reiki as a client, or learn to do it yourself, connecting with positive healing energy provides an opportunity to experience profound peace, enhanced healing and a wonderful sense of self-empowerment.
